Every Wednesday at Nowadays, we screen a film in the big back yard in conjunction with Maysles Cinema, the Harlem based film house founded by the late, great Albert Maysles. Tonight we’re very excited to be presenting Our Vinyl Weighs a Ton, the story of Stones Throw Records.

Stones Throw Records has been the stupendously creative L.A. based label for a rigorous collection of artists ranging the Hip-Hop and funk and soul spectrum. The label’s founder Peanut Butter Wolf (Chris Manak) is praised in this 2014 documentary by artists such as Tyler the Creator, Madlib and Questlove for his enthusiastic culling of great talent in an idiosyncratic environment. And following in Manak’s illuminating spirit, this film provides a luscious and intimate look into the musical overlap and influences brought together under a decidedly independent name to put out essential material by names like MF Doom, J Dilla, and Madlib. Exclusive concert footage, interviews with top names in hip-hop and inner circle home footage make this a not to be missed film for any music fan.
